The article investigates characteristics of the intrinsic and Bi 3+ -related luminescence of YNbO 4 :Bi powders with different Bi contentsstudied by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy methods. It is assumed that the YNbO 4 :Bi emission is of exciton origin. The main Bi 3+ -related emission band (2.53 eV) excited at 4.09 eV is ascribed to the radiative decay of an exciton localized around a single Bi 3+ ion. A weak lower-energy (2.41 eV) emission is ascribed to an exciton localized around a dimer Bi 3+ center. There is no emission arising from the 3 P 1,0 → 1 S 0 transitions of a Bi 3+ ion.
