In this paper the question of spontaneous emission of atoms is considered. In nonrelativistic quantum mechanics,
only the probability of this radiation is sought, and the physical side of this process is not considered. Therefore, we turned to quantum electrodynamics, which, in particular, believes that there is a physical vacuum consisting of virtual quanta. An attempt is made to construct a qualitative picture of the spontaneous emission of atoms as a consequence of the influence on the electron, which is in one of the excited discrete state of the atom.
